You don't need to know every piece of legislation in depth to be a successful contractor
but the more you do know the more of your turnover will remain with you or your company
and the less will be donated to our Illustrious Chancellor for him to waste.
Inland Revenue
Their huge website
appears to be designed to intimidate the public. Much of the material (especially in the
IR35 section) is based more on how the
revenue would like the law to be than on what it actually is.
An in depth discussion of IR35 is beyond the remit of 4Contractors but is the one
factor that will most influence how much tax you pay and/or your choice of how to operate.
Customs & Excise
HM Customs & Excise are responsible for,
amongst other things, VAT.
This will only affect contractors chosing to use their own limited company.
I'm sure that those with existing companies are aware of the Flat Rate VAT scheme - if not then
ask your accountant what you are paying him for!!!
Try the Flat Rate VAT calculator
- the scheme was changed from Jan 1, 2004 and is probably now be the most appropriate way of paying VAT for many contractors
